Hunter speaks at national nursing conference on topic of suicide

Renaud Cook Drury Mesaros partner Jeff Hunter traveled earlier this month to Clearwater, Florida to participate in a panel for the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC) annual conference.

Part of a presentation that grew out of a lengthy white paper, Hunter appeared alongside Patient Care Executive CEO Margaret Gallagher to address the recent resurgence of suicide deaths in America. Legal Nurse Consultants often have a chance to participate in the analysis and resolutions associated with suicide claims.

Mental health professionals have a duty to exercise a degree of care and skill considered reasonably prudent in treating mental conditions possibly leading to suicide. Liability is complex in determining when the relationship with the patient requires action from a medical professional to prevent another from self-harm.

“I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to talk with so many distinguished professionals,” Hunter said. “I could tell this topic led many in the audience to ask questions. There were a lot of people in the audience who hadn’t engaged in this type of discussion before, and it’s an important discussion.”

Hunter heads RCDM’s Healthcare Practice with a focus on defending clients in trial. His record of successes in the courtroom has been recognized by clients and media alike due to his track record in working with clients’ most challenging legal matters.

In addition, Hunter works with product and professional liability and medical malpractice.
